Whoop 5/MG issues and how to get them addressed

I was contacted about the HRV spikes I had which as you know throw my recovery way off. My high is 163 and my low is 11

Whoop agreed that outlier results should not affect recovery like they do and they seem to agree that an Average HRV over a month or so is perhaps not the best approach especially with someone like me that runs very low around 20. They said they would address but still I have had no feed back even when I directly tag the person who is supposed to be fixing it. :cricket:

That’s so sad. I thought you get a 1 on 1 personal feedback on this

No it’s gone really quiet on that front. Seems a simple fix to me and looks like they already have one. The average HRV on the main page is used for recovery and always shows 50% below average but the HRV range in the Health monitor is always green and with in range. Makes no sense that they have two different measurements that conflict with each other.

Oh dear Lord  They should really get things together very soon. Otherwise people will take a run on Polar’s new device next week

I would agree that it’s software related based on the differences in the inconsistencies. I just don’t get why my 4.0 seemed to be pretty accurate and now the 5.0 is so off. I think most people agree that the 5.0 is basically the same hardware as the 4.0. Based on that, it seems like it should be a smooth transition. I have also noticed that sometimes my 5.0 is “on” and sometimes it’s wildly off. It reminds me of what the 3.0 was like. I even had an incident the other day where I was cleaning up a mess my child made which involved some scrubbing. I looked at my app later and it registered a workout with a heart rate of 175! I went back later and essentially replicated what I had done while wearing my Apple Watch just to see how off it was. My heart rate didn’t even get to 100. SMH. The Health Span feature is why I’ve stayed with Whoop. It’s helped me to pay more attention to how I work out and how I prioritize recovery. I’m really hoping they figure it out so it will be worth it to stay.

At this point it does seem to be software. They have this auto recognition of multiple sports and for it to recognize it doing something it has to make assumptions. Are those assumptions manipulating the HR to respond to what sport it thinks you are doing. Whoop says no but if that is the case then the hardware is crap. The simple fact is your heart beats, whoop detects the pulse and counts it, a cheap watch does this satisfactorily.

My last thought is they are doing HR sampling and not counting every second.

I am fed up, I am supposed to do a face to face meeting with them next week, they cancelled the one that was for yesterday, I am feeling I shouldn’t attend. But if I don’t then I’ll be letting people down on this community because we deserve answers.

@AlanGooner hello
Could you tell me please, will you have meeting with whoop team tomorrow?

I am planning on it, yes…

Great, I hope you will have some good news tomorrow.

Any news on your side?

I meet at 2:30 eastern time today. In about 2 hours

Update on my meeting with Whoop yesterday. Whilst I can’t talking about everything that was shared with me, the meeting was very positive. They are seeing our posts and understand our frustrations.

Points that mattered most to me we discussed

-HRV issues. They definitely understand the problem for users with low HRV can be adversely affected by small swings. The spikes really could be something important and worth keeping in view but to not allow it to adversely affect recovery for months to come

-HR good days and bad days. I explained I am a very lean chap and for whatever reason it does seem to do well for me on the wrist. Since moving to the Bicep better results but for no reason at all will have a crazy high day that puts me into a extremely high strain. One thing they are going to look into is the fact I customized my baseline zones, they will audit my HR Zones to make sure nothing unusual was introduced.

-Steps and how they affect Whoop age & Pacing of aging. First thing I found out was the 16K is not a target for me. It’s just a graph line total so that for most people will easily fall in this bucket. We are supposed to really look at the color if the line and try to get into the green. I told them this is confusing and it really would be better for a target individually based on your age. Supposedly our goals are defined based on age but in my mind if I can see the goal target as my number seeing, 16k does do anything but put me off. I also explained that for me steps are not important. I rarely walk anywhere which I think a lots of cyclists fall into this bracket. I think they took this on board.

-Blood Pressure insights. I explained that generally the morning insights match my BP cuff reading. So overall I am happy but explained that the range is confusing. I often see a range like last night of 105 to 125 to give me a 115 estimate. My question was I mostly at 125 during the night but dropped to 105 briefly so really for most the night was was above normal. I asked for clear insights in this area.

-Firmware updates. I said, we as users, need a better understanding of what is in a firmware, what is new, what was addressed. When you click on update there should be a pop up to say what the firmware is doing. They did agree that this can be improved.

-Recovery. Has been adversely affected by HR on bike rides but mostly HRV spikes and being part of the recovery for months. I have been using Whoop MG since July, first month I had good recovery scores. But since the HRV spikes I have mostly been red. They did understand my concerns here and will look into it.

-Whoop MG moved to Bicep. Whilst they still say that for ECG is should be on the wrist if it works on the bicep then the results are ok. BP insights are fine on the bicep. I will remain to wear mine on the Bicep.

What I never discussed but wanted to was
-Refund Policy. Since whoop MG takes almost a month to fully load Health Span, how can you know that Whoop is good fir for you and cancel with in a month.
-ECG not working properly for lots of users.

As stated, they did discuss a few things with me which could be exciting. They are seeing our posts, are reading them and using them to prioritize updates. I think it was a great meeting and to be honest very refreshing. I can’t imagine Garmin setting up a Zoom meeting with me to discuss issues. Whilst I have been less that satisfied with my experience so far, to be able to report and air my concerns have been really good. :slightly_smiling_face:

Thank you Alexi, Evan and Ryan

Thank you for sharing your experience! We can at least hope that the team is working on a fix for all these issues we are seeing.

Just a side note: I informed myself about the new Polar Whoop-style device that was launched this week. It’s seems to be disappointing in a few ways. So I’m not going to buy it and stay with Whoop.

Just hoping, as mentioned already, the team will work on fixes and give us firmware updates soon.

It was positive meeting for sure and they are listening. I looked at the Polar device and it’s not for me. I do have the Helio Ring and Strap and like so far. But Whoop is better if they can fix the issues. My opinion is you need more than one device to get a full picture. I have probably gone over the top but up until yesterday I was really close to cutting my losses and taking Whoop off. I am sticking with it for now because I feel things will improve. :slightly_smiling_face:

Yes I hope so. I do not want a ring. Maybe I try Helio in addition to Whoop

Helio is on my Wrist and reports excellent HR. Where Helio is no where near as good as Whoop is auto activity detection. Seems to start early and end later but that isn’t an issue for me. My Activities are in Garmin. As long as Whoop/Helio capture my exercise for analysis I am fine with it being a little bit off

Thank you for you sharing your meeting. In the morning I had a running training and I was so disappointing whoop result as much as I could. I hope we will see significant improvements in the nearest future.

Thank you, @AlanGooner! It was great talking to you yesterday. Thank you for all the feedback as always. We’re super appreciative of the time and all of the notes. Our goal is to keep transferring feedback into action and working through it all in our roadmap. We really appreciate the help. Thank you! Talk soon!

This was a first for me but heard others say it’s happening. Off body notification when it’s not. Plenty of charge. Lasted about 5 mins and then came back online.

Most concerning to me is the wildly inaccurate HR while cycling on 5. Leads to crazy training status comments from Garmin, i.e. saying I’m overreaching when I’ve done a longer slower ride with little strain (and a lower mileage total from week prior). Jumps 20 beats at a time and then right back again. Have been wearing a Whoop for 3+ years and never this scale of problem until Whoop 5. Incredibly disappointed that I renewed. Will definitely go back to a chest strap so I have some idea what my training status really is.
