Whoop wants me to get out of bed every time i wake in the night...just so it's band can notice i'm awake... AND incorrect Whoop terminology => misleading data

Complaint to WHOOP:

The app says WAKE should be used to describe when i’ve “finished trying to sleep” which is incorrect, particularly when i’ve woken at 310 and failed to get back to sleep until alarm and get up time at 610. I edit wake time to 310 (noted by briefly looking at clock) after the app has recorded it to be 610. Whoop is not logging my 3hr awake-in-bed time, which is distinctly less recovery-beneficial than being asleep again for those 3 hours, which it thinks i am if ‘WAKE’ time, as Whoop calls it, is left as 610 time. Incorrect terminology in whoop app is leading to misleading recovery results and an UX fail of the main purpose for me having this assessment system. It is particularly dismal performance when, after making my point on Whoop chat, it tells me i should actually get up when i wake early JUST TO HELP THE HARDWARE RECORD THAT I’VE WOKEN…! When i reply with that’s a ridiculous suggestion; completely diametrically opposed to the need for me to stay in bed to enable me to get back to sleep again, Whoop chat then AGREES with my response…! Who writes This AI crap? This is basic stuff!

How WHOOP currently handles long awake periods
• A single uninterrupted Sleep entry will stay “open” unless it detects a wake period longer than about 50 minutes.
• When that threshold is crossed, WHOOP automatically creates a second entry (Sleep + Nap).
• If the wake period is shorter—or if heart-rate and movement signals are very calm—it can mis-classify the time in bed as continued sleep.

Making your 3-hour awake window count
Because your 03:10-06:10 stretch exceeds the 50-minute threshold, the most reliable way to show it is to split the night into two entries:

  1. Open the overnight Sleep in the app.
  2. Tap the three-dot menu › Edit Activity.
  3. Change the end-time to 03:10 and Save.
  4. Return to the overview, tap “+” › Sleep, and add a second entry starting 06:10 (or whatever time you did fall back asleep) and ending at your final wake-up.
    – If you never fell back asleep, simply leave the second entry out; your Time in Bed vs. Hours of Sleep metrics will reflect the awake period.

This approach keeps your Recovery calculation honest by removing those three hours from total sleep while still capturing the full time in bed.

Why editing the single Wake time alone can feel “wrong”
Adjusting the wake time earlier closes the entire Sleep entry at 03:10, so WHOOP treats everything after that as daytime. That prevents the algorithm from seeing the context of your efforts to fall back asleep and, understandably, skews your recovery.

A few extra tips
• If you do drift off again, leave the band on and let it detect the new sleep; you can always merge or adjust later.
• Very still wakefulness (reading or meditating in bed) can mimic light sleep on wrist-based sensors. Gentle stretching or standing for a moment often gives the algorithm the cue it needs without forcing you to leave the bedroom.
• After any manual edit, give the app a minute to re-process—Recovery will recalculate automatically.

Your suggested solutions are impractical and frankly, absurd. I never needed to look at a clock when i wake before i got the whoop band [and wanted to know the time to cross check what the band would record]. Making the effort to look at the clock, and in so doing incur the detrimental side effect of then knowing how long i have left before the alarm wakes me more; is unconducive for me for getting back to sleep, but this is something i’ve had to ignore during the early days of this trial. This is a core failure of this whoop hardware and data processing. “Gentle stretching or standing for a moment often gives the algorithm the cue it needs”, in the bedroom or not, is ridiculous if i want to stay still to try get back to sleep. I can briefly tolerate an inhuman chat bot giving me this non-real-world suggestion, but coming from a human is laughable. And now you’re saying i should log a second or more sleep periods a night for “whatever time you did fall back asleep”!? Are you living in the real world? No one’s looking at their watch as they fall asleep. It’s adding to my allostatic load to have to edit my sleep whoop data every morning with times that the band should be recording! That’s an idiotic suggestion and definitely putting me on a path of cancelling this assessment kit in 27 days.

Basic terminology UX fail too that you haven’t acknowledged.

• The sensor relies on heart-rate changes and micro-movements. When you stay very still—even while fully awake—those signals can look nearly identical to light sleep.
• A wake period only auto-registers when movement or cardiovascular patterns shift enough to cross the algorithm’s threshold (about 50 minutes of clear, wake-like data).
• That’s why, in edge cases like yours, the awake time may be counted as sleep unless you nudge the data afterward.

Options that avoid clock-watching or extra editing

  1. Let the night log as one continuous Sleep entry and focus on the detailed metrics inside it.
    – The “Wake Events” count and minute-by-minute hypnogram will still show periods of wakefulness, even if the overall block isn’t split.
    – Recovery is driven mainly by resting heart rate and HRV captured once you finally do fall back asleep, so the score won’t treat the whole three hours as restorative deep sleep.

  3. If you decide later that you want absolute precision, you can adjust the entry once—no need to note the exact minute you fell back asleep. Editing to “close” the session at your best estimate already corrects the Recovery calculation.

This is incorrect advice!:

Resting is not as fully restorative as being asleep. While lying still provides excellent physical relief, stress reduction, and energy conservation, it does not replicate the vital biological and neurological processes that only occur during deep sleep.

The Differences in Recovery

  • Brain Restoration & Memory: During deep sleep and REM cycles, your brain flushes out toxins, consolidates memories, and repairs neural pathways. Quiet wakefulness cannot replicate this.
  • Cellular & Muscle Repair: Your body releases crucial growth hormones, lowers cortisol (stress hormones), and accelerates tissue and muscle repair while you are unconscious. Resting helps muscles relax, but deep repair requires sleep.
  • The “Quiet Wakefulness” Benefit: Lying still with your eyes closed is still highly beneficial if you cannot sleep. It lowers your heart rate, reduces blood pressure, and calms the central nervous system, making it much better than pacing around or stressing about not sleeping.

While lying quietly in bed acts as a good buffer, it should be viewed as an aid to relaxation rather than a complete substitute for an actual night of rest

Leaving the sleep recorded end time as that when i got up is giving just 4% of the 8hr4min ‘sleep time’ as AWAKE time which is incorrect. I was awake from 310-610 which is 37% of the ‘sleep time’. ie your suggestion produces wrong results, making the Whoop sleep monitoring system useless and, further, making me highly suspicious of any of the other functions of the app & hardware.
