Whoop Not Back-Syncing W/ Apple Health for GPS Data

I saw on a post that whoop can backfill the gps data for an outdoor activity if you start the activity using your Apple Watch/Native Apple Workout. It worked for me for a couple of out outdoor rows but now has stopped working all together.

I have my Whoop 5.0 (bicep) connected to my Apple Watch when I start the activity and then I end the activity when I am next to my phone (I don’t have my phone whole on the water). What am I missing here for my outdoor rowing activity on my Whoop to backfill the gps data from my Apple Watch and post the whoop activity w/ the gps data on my Strava.

Hey @Diegod96,

Thank you for sharing your setup! To clarify, WHOOP itself does not have built-in GPS and relies on your mobile device’s GPS for route tracking during activities. For GPS data to be backfilled or included in your WHOOP activity and then posted to Strava, the following are important:

  • You need to start the activity using the WHOOP app with “Track Route” enabled for the activity type (e.g., rowing).

  • Your phone must be with you during the activity to capture GPS data, as WHOOP uses your phone’s GPS.

  • WHOOP can import GPS data from Apple Health if the activity was started on Apple Watch, but this requires proper syncing and permissions.

  • Ending the activity near your phone helps sync data, but the phone needs to have recorded GPS during the activity.

  • Ensure WHOOP app has all necessary permissions for location and Apple Health data access.

  • The activity type must support GPS tracking in WHOOP (rowing is supported).

  • GPS data is included when exporting to Strava if “Track Route” was enabled or imported via Apple Health.

Since you start the activity on Apple Watch and end near your phone, please confirm that:

  • WHOOP app has permission to read Apple Health workout data.

  • Your phone was able to record GPS during the activity.

  • The WHOOP app is updated to the latest version.

  • “Track Route” is enabled in the WHOOP app for the rowing activity.

If all these are set correctly, GPS data should backfill from Apple Watch workouts to WHOOP and then post to Strava with the route.

The same started happening to me after Dec 1st. Up until that day, all my runs recorded on Apple Watch and imported by Strava contained GPS data. After that date, GPS data stopped being imported by WHOOP. This is highly inconvenient because these runs can’t be used for VO2 Max estimation anymore. WHOOP’s AI says that the GPS data from Apple Watch / Apple Health being imported is not supported behavior, but the was absolutely working before.
