Whoop 5.0 not tracking strain/heart rate/location when I start an activity

Hi all, given all the posts on here that have helped with trouble shooting I figured I’d putting my bug out there to see if there might be a communal solution. I tried checking previous posts but didn’t find a specific bug report that matches this, but apologize if it is a repost.

To answer questions up front, yes, I have contacted Whoop support and got a generic AI generated list of things to try, which I had already tried (updates, rebooting, uninstall/reinstall). I have done it all. I sent whoop support a screen recording and they just said, “You found a bug and we’ve escalated it.”

Here are my specs:
Pixel 8 Pro
Android 16
Whoop Firmware 50.34.1.0
Whoop App Version 5.419.0 (Updated on Sep 20, 2025)

The issue: Since early/mid-August, any time I start an activity in the Whoop app, it starts the count down but then freezes on “1” and crashes. When I reopen the app the activity is still running, but it will not calibrate the strain, track the heart rate, or, if it is a GPS activity, track the location. If I let the activity run, it does ultimately produce the metrics for the activity. However, it essentially means I can’t use this to track runs any more or do any sort of HR zone conditioning training.

Has anyone dealt with this?

Hey @holisticism,

Thanks for taking the time to write in. I’ll escalate this to Membership Services team. Look out for an email from them.

I’m having this exact same issue. Like exactly the same. What was the resolution for you?

No resolution. Just a very long email with no specifics (copied below).

The app has updated several times (now on version 5.422.2), but the bug persists. No firmware updates. I’m giving them until mid-November to fix this, otherwise I’m going to demand a refund on my remaining time. $260/yr for a fitness tracker that doesn’t track is… bad. At this point I’m not sure why I’m wearing it every day.

Thanks for your patience, and I wanted to follow up regarding the issue you reported with your WHOOP 5.0 not tracking strain, heart rate, or location correctly when starting an activity, and crashing when started.

A bug report for this behavior was submitted on September 11, 2025, and our engineering team is actively working on resolving it under an open investigation. While I don’t yet have an exact resolution date, please know that your case is linked to this master issue, and we’ll be sure to update you as soon as more information becomes available.

These kinds of issues can take a significant amount of time to resolve due to the complex nature of the task of discovering the source of, resolving and coding a solution to the bug that you’re experiencing. We can assure you that our team is working hard to resolve this for you. We are sorry we don’t have a positive update for you at this time.

However, we will notify you as soon as there is progress. In the meantime, please ensure your firmware and WHOOP App is up-to-date, as a fix may be included in future updates.

In the meantime, I’ve applied 1 month of credit to your membership to account for the disruption while we work on a fix.

We know it’s frustrating to experience these challenges, and we truly appreciate your patience and feedback as we work to get this resolved. Please hang in there—we’ll keep you posted.

If you have any questions in the future, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Best,
