Synching Apple Health GPS Data To Whoop Activity From Non Apple Watch

I am thinking about moving on from my Apple Watch Ultra 2 to a Suunto, Coros or Garmin watch. I know Whoop would backfill GPS data from Apple Health (i.e. I start a rowing exercise on my Apple Watch and Whoop will create a rowing workout with the GPS data from Apple Health when I finish the activity next to my phone).

Will Whoop do the same if I start a workout that uses GPS from the watch (run, cycle, row, etc.) and finish said workout next to my phone? If I have my Whoop broadcast to HR to the watch and finish my workout would the sync not happen since my Whoop was not connected to my phone at the time I finish the workout? Do I need my Whoop to be connected to my phone at the time I finish the workout on my watch and it uploads to Garmin Connect, Suunto, Coros, etc. and then to Apple Health for it to backfill the workout data on the Whoop side with GPS data?

Hi @Diegod96 , thanks for reaching out! At a high level: WHOOP can import workouts from Apple Health, but WHOOP does not import GPS route data from Apple Health. So if you record a run/ride/row on a Garmin/Suunto/COROS watch and it eventually syncs into Apple Health, WHOOP may still create/import the activity, but the GPS map/route won’t “backfill” into WHOOP via Apple Health.

A couple other helpful details:

  • Broadcasting WHOOP heart rate to your watch won’t prevent the Apple Health activity from importing. The main thing on the WHOOP side is that the WHOOP app needs to be open and actively syncing with your WHOOP for imported activities to properly process/score. So, if you finish away from your phone, you may just need to open WHOOP afterward and let it sync.

  • If your goal is to have GPS routes represented in your broader ecosystem, WHOOP doesn’t directly track GPS (routes typically live in the source GPS platform). If you use Strava, WHOOP can share your activity metrics there, and GPS can be included for Strava when route tracking is enabled in WHOOP’s Strain Target settings (with Always On GPS permission) or when a GPS-enabled activity is involved via Apple Health.
