We’re excited to share that Step Count is now available through the WHOOP Developer API.
What’s new?
Starting September 23, 2026, cycles returned by the WHOOP Developer API include a new step_count field.
-
Step count is available on both GET /v2/cycle/{cycleId} and GET /v2/cycle.
-
It uses the existing read:cycles scope, so there’s no new permission to request and members do not need to reconnect to your app.
How does it work?
Step count follows the WHOOP cycle, which runs from when a member wakes up until they next wake up. Because of this, step totals may not always match the midnight-to-midnight totals shown by other apps or devices.
A few things to know:
-
The current cycle will show steps so far and update throughout the day.
-
If step data isn’t available for a cycle—for example, if the strap wasn’t worn—the step_count field will return null rather than 0.
