REGRETTING UPGRADE TO Whoop 5.0 - less accurate device than 4.0

I’ve been with Whoop since 2021 and upgraded to 5.0 just before Christmas with the intent of giving my 4.0 to my partner along with one year membership. The new device is not as accurate as the 4.0 and after numerous back and forth with support (first responses were all AI generated emails with same useless repetitive advice until finally someone from support team responded over email) was told that there is a 2 week calibration period for any new device. This is not something that I’ve experienced with the 4.0 which I loved and am regretting upgrading, considering ending my membership and purchasing an Oura ring. The 5.0 is not picking up my activities correctly, undercounting steps, missing heart rate data/incorrectly tracking it, and is by far a worse experience than 4.0. These observations are not anecdotal as wore another HR monitor for three days at the same time to track/check the 5.0 accuracy across all types of activity.

It’s been 2 weeks and calibration has not improved and I’ve tried the hard reset/device reset multiple times. Support offered to send a bicep band for free…but I’m not going to wear a bicep band its just not practical. My options are to cancel membership (including the gift to partner), revert back to a 4.0 and see if anything improves (friend has offered me a second hand 4.0), or request that they send me a new 5.0 device and hope that the problem was device specific.

Has anyone else had a similar experience with the new 5.0?

Havnt noticed that yet but just upgraded. what i did notice is that the haptic alarm is no longer strong enough to wake me up. Seems like a known issue for months so at this point assume nothing can be done about it from a software perspective. whoop 4.0 was much better. The downgraded alarm feature in itself made me regret this upgrade and strangely that was my favorite feature. Thinking of abandoning whoop altogether.

Same. I’ve been a user for many years, current “streak” starting in 2019. Whoop 5.0 has my average caloric burn at about 65% of the 4.0, 2100 a day vs 3200 a day. Runs will be relatively consistent but assault bike and stairclimber activity is vastly different. When comparing 5.0 to other heart rate devices on the same workout, the 5.0 will consistently be off by 35%. I’ve been dealing with whoop support for months, tried all their suggestions, their standard answer is to place it higher on your wrist or wear the band in a different location such as your bicep. Bought the bicep band and make sure the wristband is higher when wearing it, still did not work. I offered to go back to the 4.0 if I could get a refund. They would not allow it. After months of back and forth with support, they sent me a new 5.0. Same issues with the new one. As a long time user, this has been very frustrating.

Hey, really empathise with you and wondering if support has provided any explaination re the 5.0 being off? My HR is consistently under estimated vs Garmin for the same activities - are you having a similar issue or is it “too sensitive”? I seem to remember that there was a feature that allowed you to adjust the device sensitivity a few years back but they seemed to have removed this from the app…

I’m buying a second hand 4.0 if the results do not improve in three days. What really suprises me is how terrible (and inconsistent) their responses have been. I wonder if anyone in WHOOP product is aware of this issue and whether or not they have any plans to fix it either via software or hardware (less likely) changes. It suggests that as a company they are struggling to scale and have no system to capture customer feedback, especially as we are both long time customers and early adopters of the product.

Same issue. I just ‘upgraded’ to the 5.0 and what is normally 16-19 strain day is now a 5.4. I had 2.5 years worth of data for runs, climbs, cycling, etc and now it is essentially like starting over and not close to accurate. I did gift my 4.0 to my husband. Does anyone know if I can just switch back? And agree on the alarm. Vibration no longer wakes me.

Same here! I just unpaired the 5.0 and put the 4.0 back on! Very disappointing upgrade.

I purchased a second hand 4.0 and then switched to it as the 5.0 just wasn’t accurate or working at all as noted in past posts. The second hand device is much better than the 5.0 but find that the activity detection is still a bit behind the 4.0 I wore for 2 years. Unfortunately they’ve stopped making/selling bands for the 4.0.

Given the number of customers having similar problems with the 5.0, my hope is that they will figure out how to improve it support

Ditto as above. I just upgraded to the 5.0 and it’s drastically more stingy with the Strain and Calorie counts than the 4.0. I did feel the 4.0 was a bit too generous as it would sometimes log an Activity when I was just making breakfast.

But the 5.0 seems to have swung the pendulum too far the other way. With the 5.0 I will get to about 4.2 by around 9am. At 5pm, it’s only gone up to a 4.5. Granted, I did not work out during this time. But I also did not lay around the couch. I have been up and down at work. I think 8 hours of movement should give me more than that.

I will do a 1-hour superset weight lifting session after 5. It bumps me from 4.5 to 7.0 for the day, but say I only burned 200 calories during that activity.

The 5.0 is dramatically off for HR during activities. Don’t bother getting a replacement because all of the devices are off (I’ve tested multiple against other HR devices). The 4.0 is much better but the 5.0 is horrendous.

The support experience has also been a nightmare and now I’m left with a useless device that I’ve already paid 18 months for because they will not issue a refund and I’ve already gifted my 4.0.

Just wondering: if you still have your 4.0 after upgrading to the 5.0, has anyone tried wearing the 4.0 to gather all the data, and then wearing the 5.0 just for a few minutes to get the feedback on VO2 max, Healthspan? That way we can get an accurate data set and still benefit from the new features in 5.0 that people seem to like. If I don’t hear anything back, I’ll be the guinea pig on this

I ordered one back in September 2025(I’m an Elite 3 cyclist in Belgium) and I immediately ran into issues: HRV was inaccurate, heart rate spikes up to 200 bpm while I was literally washing my bike, etc.

Out of curiosity, I came back here to see if these problems had been fixed by now… and honestly, I’m shocked to see exactly the same issues still being reported.

I actually hesitated to buy one again, because I thought they might have solved it. The reason I even considered it is simple: I really like the app and the way the data is presented. But the core problem remains — the data itself isn’t reliable.

And as cyclists, data has to be correct. There’s no room for “almost accurate.” Especially when Whoop markets itself as providing the most accurate data on the market — the reality is far from that.

It’s extremely discouraging to read about the same problems all over again: HRV inaccuracies, incorrect heart rate readings, poor sleep tracking, random activities being detected when you’re not even training… It’s honestly a shame for a brand like this.

This is a product promoted by some of the top athletes in the world, and it really makes me wonder how much they’re getting paid — because I highly doubt they fully trust this data either, or that they’re not experiencing the same issues.

As an athlete, you need to be able to rely on your data. And unfortunately, that’s still not the case here.

I’m facing the same problem. It’s been a few months since I upgraded and initially thought it was just my perception. Then I did somed detailed tests against a chest strap (Wahoo), including with different placements (I have an arm band). Even with an arm band the problem continues. I have shared a 4 page document with comparison tables and comparative screenshots with customer service. First few responses have been pre-packaged AI responses. Let’s see where I get to.

I’m hoping they can send me a replacement 5.0 hardware. Read a post on Reddit where someone finally got an accurate 5.0 after 5 iterations. But if that doesn’t solve the problem then I’ll probably go back to my 4.0 device which I still have.

I am new to whoop was intending to move from apple series to Whoop as wanted to get rid of the screen and smart watch due to data security at work… my Apple Watch accurate in capturing all my vitals including sleep and steps however My initial experience with Whoop after paying the entire years membership upfront has been extremely disappointing and full of regret as it cannot even do a thing as simple as recognising when I am asleep and tracking my vitals at the time… despite the fact they I had taken prescription medication and was asleep bet between 03:15 am to 13:30 pm which my Apple Watch correctly captured with all the accurate data of all my vitals including sleep whoop captured 0 information for the period…. My whoop was worn on my left wrist 2 fingers above the bone and my Apple Watch was beside a finger besides the whoop… I guess it’s time for me to look at a way to cancel as the whoop also does not have an option to set multiple haptic alarms like it states which I trust is a false claim by them as We can’t set up a new ala

Rm for a different time without cancelling or replacing the previous alarm,…. Once again extremely disappointed and I regret investing in whoop inn going to cancel unless someone has a work around to fix these issues???

Same! I am so extremely disappointed in Whoop and have lost all trust I had in them. I spent so much money upgrading (had to pay full year subscription + price of shipping + new device to get upgrade) and it is absolutely useless. The data is completely off and inaccurate through all metrics - sleep, recovery scores, strain, steps and calorie expenditure. It doesn’t detect workouts anymore, I’ve literally done mountain climbs with heavy heart rate for over an hour and Whoop hasn’t even detected it and when I add the activity manually it shows I haven’t even been in zone 1 throughout the workout, and steps are completely off for the distance I trekked.

There is nothing good I can say about 5.0 and I’d warn anyone who hasn’t yet upgraded from 4.0 to avoid it (though Whoop seem to be almost forcing everyone into 5.0, I was definitely fooled into thinking I ”had to” upgrade).

I’ve been a loyal Whoop user for 965 days, and have recommended it to many friends. But will absolutely not recommend it since 5.0. I have completely lost my faith and trust in Whoop and have no intention of renewing my subscription after this year’s subscription (which I’ve had to pay for with the upgrade) is up.

Whoop have lost a loyal customer and from the sounds of it on here and other platforms like Reddit, they’re about to lose several more.

Oh, and I also had the same AI generated response from customer support when trying to get clarity on why their 5.0 device is about as good as wearing banana peel strapped around your wrist. :-1:

1000% it is way less accurate on all levels. Sleep, calories, steps. All of it. How could the go so backwards and when will it be fixed?
