Issues with Whoop 5.0 calculating metrics

I’d like to report some issues that I’ve been seeing with my new Whoop 5.0. I’ve been using this product for over a year, but the new version is always reporting that my recovery is terrible due to a low HRV. When I am looking back at my metrics for the last year, not much has changed and it’s odd that I am suddenly seeing these types of stats. You would think after using the program for so long it would know I do not need 8 hours of sleep and that my HRV is generally on the lower end. I’d love to see a better way of adjusting the required sleep to fit the user.

I would like to suggest that the developers factor in a way of reporting that a user is taking a medication that may artificially create poor HRV, such as anxiety medication, since these types of medications would affect the way the metrics are calculated. I would suggest building in a wider tolerance range for HRV or perhaps allowing the algorithm to adapt to this by using baseline metrics over a longer period of time. You could do this by requesting feedback on how users are feeling on a 5 or 10 scale to establish a better baseline. I often see red recovery rates when I get a full nights sleep and feel great.

The new calculations of the 5.0 are frustrating to say the least and not helpful for managing my chronic illness like the 4.0 was.

Hi @amaitasset,

Thank you for your detailed feedback, it’s incredibly valuable. We understand how frustrating it can be when metrics don’t align with how you actually feel, especially after long-term use and while managing a chronic condition.

We’ve passed your comments on HRV sensitivity, sleep calibration, and medication impact to our product team for consideration. Insights like yours help us build a more personalized and accurate experience for all members.

Thanks again for sharing.

I second the HRV issue. I also run a very low HRV 19 is average, But since HRV is only specific to you it might not mean Poor or Good recovery. What I have noticed is Whoop calculates recovery based on a % of HRV. If my HRV moves 3 points so 16 or 22 depending upon which way gives me an excellent recovery or poor. Using a % based calculation when the HRV is low will throw wild % changes. 3 points for me is a swing of 16% up or down. This needs to be changed because a few points is normal daily changes. Someone with a 30 or 40 HRV a 3 point swing is barely a change.

PS MY low HRV has no bearing on my fitness. My Vo2 is almost 50. so HRV is only one small area to determine recovery..
