How do I adjust the “Sleep Needed” parameters?

Is there any way to change the way my whoop calculates my sleep need? I typically sleep 7-8 hours at maximum, and my “sleep needed” has been 9:30-10:30 every single day since I started using whoop. This is completely unrealistic, and by that calculation I will never have a good sleep or recovery score. I’ve heard that sleep trackers can increase stress about sleep, but I’ve never experienced that until using Whoop. I’m starting to get it now.

Hi @The_Hendo, that’s a really thoughtful concern, and it’s one that comes up for a lot of folks when they first start using WHOOP! Here’s what you should know:

How WHOOP calculates sleep need:
WHOOP’s Sleep Planner creates a truly personalized sleep need every night. It’s based on your unique baseline (learned over your first ~28 days), recent sleep debt, the strain you put on your body, and any naps. That baseline might start higher if your historic sleep/training patterns signal a genuine need for extra recovery, especially if you’ve had more demanding days or nights with shorter sleep.

Can you change it?
You can’t directly override the calculated sleep need, but you CAN fine-tune your goals and how WHOOP guides you:

- In the Sleep Planner, pick the “Improve My Sleep” goal instead of “Reach My Sleep Need.” This target sets more realistic bed/wake times based on your typical schedule—not just the highest recovery target. It helps you build consistency without the pressure to magically hit 9+ hours nightly.

- If you still want to adjust, use the “Reach My Sleep Need” setting: you can select to aim for 100%, 85%, or even 70% of your calculated need—so it matches your reality better.

- Over the first month, WHOOP continuously adapts as it gets to know your body. Many members notice the sleep need number drops and stabilizes after the initial learning period.

On sleep stress:
You’re not alone: seeing high “Need” numbers can feel like pressure at first (that’s real!), but the point is to guide you toward healthy sleep over time, not to be perfect every night. Focus on your weekly consistency and improvement, not just daily scores. Your body tells the real story, and the coaching should support—not stress you.

I hope this was helpful.

Same here and Whoop does not seem to adapt during the first month bit is still calculating a high need for me.

Probably, it is because of my training routine and the high strains but this actually does not reflect my real needs. I regularly wake up after 7 to 8 hours of sleep, rested and feeling good. But Whoop wants me to sleep at least 9 hours.

I would be very happy if I could do at least a little bit of adjustment. I am used to my training load and usually feel better than Whoop‘s algorithm is calculating based on some average data.

My sleep efficiency and consistency are above 95 percent, I have no sleep stress during the night at all. It is only the calculated deficit that is constantly off.

For my whole adult life (decades) if I sleep more than 8 hours, I am foggy with headaches till noon but sometimes all day. So my recovery score will always be low because of my own real world sleep needs? Lame.
