I recently purchased the new Whoop MG device and have been using it primarily during cycling sessions. I’ve noticed that the heart rate measurements reported by the device differ significantly from those recorded by my Garmin heart rate monitor, which I consider highly reliable.
Could you let me know if this is a known issue with the MG model? If so, is your team working on a fix, and do you have an estimated timeline for resolving it?
I’d also like to point out that I did not experience these discrepancies with the previous version of the Whoop device.
Thanks in advance for your help. I look forward to your response.
I have the same issue. Not sure what it is about cycling that causes whoop so many problems. I have been talking with support and their canned reply is make sure it is snug. It is because other daily measurements seems fine, Sleep, Rest, Walking etc. Just way off when cycling. I am starting to think it’s vibration through the handlebars that is confusing the device. It’s very annoying because everything else is awesome but since my only real activity is cycling I can’t trust strain and the suggestions it is giving me.
Yes Whoop MG. I never had a whoop before. Today’s ride was almost perfect. But I seem to get good days and then a few insanely high HRs, well into the 170s. I did move it slightly today but not much. Over two fingers now. Maybe this is the key
Pretty happy with Today’s ride. Wasn’t a big effort but matches up pretty good. Hoping it continues but worried when I do a big effort it will go crazy again.
I am also experiencing the same issue when utilizing “Functional Fitness” tracking. My previous Whoop never had this issue, I upgraded to the MG for the added general health tracking features, but somehow along the way lost one of the most vital data points. Very disappointed!
I have been experiencing very high HRMs which doesn’t match what my Apple Watch is saying. Usually when I am doing a cardio type workout. Never had this issue with my v 4.0
I wanted to add my story to this conversation, since I’m also seeing major differences in heart rate readings between Whoop MG and a Garmin Fenix8—especially during indoor cycling workouts.
My Setup
Workout Type: Peloton Bike, indoor sessions
Whoop MG: Spin mode, worn right wrist
Garmin Fenix8: Indoor Cycling mode, worn left wrist
Long-time Whoop user (this is my fifth device since 2017), and this issue is new to me
What Happens
During workouts: Heart rate readings can differ by more than 30 bpm between devices, which then causes very different Strain and Endurance Scores in the Whoop app.
At rest: No real difference between the two—almost identical heart rates.
Impact: Makes it tough to trust the Strain and score metrics, since the Whoop reads much lower than the Garmin when riding.
Both devices are worn properly and snugly, each on a separate wrist (as I’ve always done—Whoop right, Garmin left).
Never had a big gap with earlier Whoop generations; only the MG seems to behave this way for me.
Has anyone else found a solution? Any improvement? Has anyone figured out what’s driving it, or found any tricks to get the two devices to line up better?
The Garmin and the MG’s graphs of the same workouts are completely different. They show a completely different “story”: I would post them, but I am not allowed to post more than one image.
I’m experiencing the same issue, but when simply walking even. My heart rate will show in the 150s while walking, when it is actually in the 90s (taking my own pulse). I’m suing a Whoop 5.0, not the MG. Same as others, this wasn’t a problem with Whoop 4.0.
