Blood Pressure Data to Apple Health

Hello! Is there plans to update data going to Apple health that includes daily blood pressure readings?

Daily BP would be nice writing to Apple health but until Whoop sorts out the metric it’s not a good idea. Whoop takes the highest and lowest measurement and divides by 2. That is not good logic, what if you have 20 readings at close to 130 and 1 at 100. 130 + 100 = 230 / 2 = 115 equals a great reading. So we think BP is awesome but maybe it’s not. Until Whoop adds up all the readings and divides by the number of readings it’s simply not accurate and should not be written to Apple Health. I have reported this to Whoop but falls on deaf ears.. :thinking:

New here, but I’m interested in this, too. I read that WHOOP doesn’t calculate blood pressure by averaging the highest and lowest readings. According to their official documentation, Blood Pressure Insights use machine learning models trained on overnight HRV, RHR, and PPG waveform data, calibrated with a cuff reading. It’s a once-daily estimate, not a simple high-low average.

Yes, this is what they have told me but they still do an average after they calculate the range. So if my range is 130 to 100 I will get 115 and all rosy. But this calculated range has a reasonably high number and how much time spent in the that high range is unknown. At this point I find the high number troubling and leads me to wonder about the low number. I see the FDA is getting involved with this and whilst I know this is not a medical device the numbers need to be somewhat trusted. Other devices are out there that measure BP without a cuff based device but uses other measurements that the FDA has approved. Seems Whoop is reluctant to discuss with the FDA which then leads to worries of what are they hiding.

I have actually no insights into how whoop actually does this, but based on my general technical knowledge, it works different to what you probably think.

I imagine it more to be an estimate based on their reference data. So let’s assume there were people in the reference data in your gender, age and general fitness level and had similar sleep performance and Hr HTV RHR etc, whoop will estimate your value to be similar (with reference to your manual measurement from the cuff). So it basically mathematically estimates a range around your cuff measurement.
I believe if you put it the cuff value as 140-90 for example, your estimates will float around that.

There is no actual relation to the actual pressure you might have. That’s why they call this wellness feature and it could potentially be available to any optical HR sensor with the right training data.

Which just to be clear, I think is a fair feature and can still be very helpful and interesting to see. Maybe I would just call it cardio vascular health in % or something like that. Would likely cause less confusion.

I have been tempted to change the base values the next time it asks. Add fictitiously high values and monitor the results. But the values I last entered were in the 115/75 range. My morning reading with a cuff today was 110/73. My range today in the app in the app was 106 to 126 and 67 to 77 for today. None of this is bad and the fact that the estimate value is close to my cuff is somewhat comforting. But I have had readings in the 130s but the end result still be good. Whilst I again know this is an estimate if it’s a one time calculation done first thing in the morning why not do the calculation say 6 times during the night so the results would be spread out over 6 hours. Then flag time each calculation what done :slight_smile:

I’ve made the experience that the readings show values close to your latest cuff measurement. If this is high Whoop estimates high values until I do the next calibration. If it’s low Whoop estimates low values until the next calibration. I understand it’s a wellness feature. But if it’s working this way I can save myself the blood pressure feature and use the cuff instead.
