I would like to be able to turn this onto AIRPLANE mode or not wear it during sleep. I am tracking sleep with another device that allows me to use Airplane mode and I’m not interested in the EMF exposure. Would you consider adding this feature, or allowing data to come in from other sources so that we can still get good stats? Without wearing it for sleep, its not worth wearing at all.
Hi @coachnatalied, great question. Currently, WHOOP devices do not have an Airplane mode or option to disable Bluetooth while still collecting data. The sensor is designed for continuous, low-power Bluetooth connection to ensure data is reliably collected and synced, especially for detailed sleep metrics. At the moment, WHOOP also does not allow importing sleep data from other devices.
For optimal Recovery, Sleep, and Strain stats, the device must be worn during sleep so it can directly measure skin temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, and movement patterns.
WHOOP’s Bluetooth operates at extremely low power (comparable to most wearables), and the consensus from health authorities is that these levels are considered safe for continuous wear.
However, if minimizing EMF is a top priority, you can remove the device for sleep—but key stats and insights will be less accurate or unavailable. WHOOP is always updating features based on user feedback, so I’ll be sure to pass along your suggestion for an Airplane mode and broader data import options! Let me know if you have any other questions, or want info on best practices for getting the most useful insights from your WHOOP.
I would like to iterate here that as a customer, I would like to turn off the Bluetooth or put the device in airplane mode at will. The device can already store metrics for up to two weeks of data, without need to sync. The need for constant transmission isn’t necessary for me, especially during sleep. Having the ability for it to track my sleep and sync later, or even steps in areas that require Bluetooth to be off and sync later, would be nice.
Hey!
I would like to escalate this question as a customer and from health perspective. I would like to turn off the Bluetooth or put the device in airplane mode when needed. The device can store collected data for up to two weeks without need to sync, sync can be done on demand when user wants to do it.
Please add it to your roadmap and deliver such functionality with top priority.
Best Regards.
I bought this and paid for 1 year not knowing wouldn’t include the option to disable the retarded Bluetooth.
When are you guys going to allow for disabling of your totally safe long term EMF from Bluetooth?? My whoop is still in a box great experience.
I agree! There is no need for constant transmission as the device already has the capability to store data. I turn my phone on airplane mode every night anyways and the whoop quickly updates in the morning. I would just like the device to not be trying to transmit all night long as well.
Thank you! @Durkin
You can go to settings and unpair it. It will still record for a week as long as you wear it. It will reduce emf. You just click on Pair device and it will immediately connect again. You can just sync it once a day if you want. Additionally, close out the app. This will reduce EMF and talking to each other significantly and will be a much much lower emf I believe.
100% YES , TBH Whoop isn’t to concerned with bluetooth. I think anything man made when it comes to emf , lower powered or not always will have a question mark , even with all the articles saying its safe. Alot of people, I am sure wouldn’t mind having this feature to turn it off but its unnecessary to keep it always on when you can just turn it back on afterwards , ie oura ring with the charger. Let the customer choose , maybe have a vote on the forum for future features or send out surveys to people by email .
It is always listening so won’t make a difference , but yes would reduce it , prob just as much as turning off bluetooth on your phone I take it, so likely no difference to really unpair.
To that point - while sleeping, many people put their hands somewhere close to their heads and this is also one of the concerns
This is my biggest concern. I sleep with my hands on my head face down. That is 8 continuous hours with emf (however low) directly at my head. Now doing that every night for a year subscription cycle, you can see how concerning that can be. It is the reason I stop using it.
Without the sleep recovery tracking, the device is no longer useful to me.
I would also like to thumbs up the need for turning off bluetooth at night.
Whether or not the science is true on EMF / Bluetooth or not, I would still like to remove the bluetooth emissions while I sleep.
The argument that Whoop needs to continue relaying information to monitor sleep is not valid, as it can store data for longer than needed. And I am also wondering, you have mentioned that turning your phone on airplane mode will reduce the signal. What is the evidence of this? Has it been tested?
I just would have thought with the incredible technology whoop has, and with its interest in health and longevity, it would be able to update this so you can completely disconnect any signal while you sleep.
Second this as a new Whoop member.
I would really like to be a paying Whoop Customer again, but with the actual Fact that there is no way to turn of the Bluetooth, there is no option for me to be your customer. I think the sooner you enable that feature, the more stress you will prevent.
The whole longevity Community have a big eye
on this topic, even with the leader Bryan who is your Customer. I think this will change soon when there will be no look on this.
cheers from Dubai
Same here! Please add an airplane mode
I’d like to double down on the airplane mode - it’d be the one reason I’d switch to the oura ring - regardless of enjoying whoops UI and readouts etc.
There’s a lot that we’re unaware of in regards to EMF exposure long term, if there’s not even a slight chance of risk of it impacting health we wouldn’t be having this conversation nor would other wearables even bother having an airplane mode.
Come on Whoop - get it going.
Second this! No other band allows this feature so it could be an advantage for Whoop.
Whoop asks for user feedback and gets plenty of people who are providing user feedback on this topic (yet) with no response or interest in adapting this feature. I truly don’t understand the complication between enabling a feature to turn off Bluetooth and airplane mode. Garmin does it easily. It is absolutely unnecessary for a health and fitness device to have radiation 24/7. It defeats the purpose of the health and fitness trackers, whose main goal is to be “your health”. Especially when we are using a screen-less device. There are studies to show how detrimental radiation is on the body and how it can even affect heart rate, so I would think being a company who supposedly puts health first would offer the option to disable the mechanisms that contribute to radiation. Not sure how much more customers have to plea. Not to mentions, you could have plenty of new potential customers just by integrating this option because a ton of people look for this feature before purchasing.
Please add this as an option. I love the whoop but as someone who is sensitive to radiation and can feel the effects of it physically with tingling on the wrist, and hand, I will probably have to stop using the product. Other devices that allow me to stop this transmission don’t have this effect.
I don’t care what a companies thoughts or biases are on radiation and if they believe it or not, or think we are ridiculous for being concerned. You can’t know what you don’t experience yourself. Lucky you if you are not sensitive to radiation. Many of us are. And, it hurts nothing to add the feature for those of us who can’t tolerate the exposure.
Just got a whoop. This is one of my primary concerns and would like to upvote this request as well.
