Sleep Debt, Naps and Incorrect Representation of My Recovery / WHOOP Age

Hello WHOOP Team,

I believe I may have identified either a bug or an edge case in the current sleep

algorithm that affects users who intentionally combine shorter nighttime sleep with

planned naps.

I have a question regarding the calculation of Sleep Need, Sleep Debt, Recovery, and

WHOOP Age in my specific use case.

Summary

I intentionally use planned naps as a core part of my recovery strategy. However, they

do not appear to be consistently reflected in Sleep Need, Sleep Debt, Recovery, or

WHOOP Age, even though they clearly provide a physiological recovery benefit.

Example

For the night of July 13-14, 2026, WHOOP reports:

• Sleep Need: 9:33 h

• Nighttime Sleep: 4:51 h

• Sleep Performance: 51%

• Sleep Debt: 2:07:48 h

On the same day I also took a total of 2:19 h of naps. According to the published

formula:

Sleep Need = Baseline + Strain + Previous Sleep Debt − Naps

If these naps were fully included, my Sleep Need should be approximately 7:10-7:15

hours, with a correspondingly lower Sleep Debt.

Despite this, the detailed calculation shows “Naps: 0 seconds”, even though my naps

were successfully recorded.

Impact

1. Sleep Need and Sleep Debt appear consistently too high.

2. My Recovery status (red/yellow/green) does not accurately reflect my true recovery.

3. My WHOOP Age tends to be worse because my total sleep (night sleep + naps) is not

fully taken into account.

My Use Case

For many years I have consistently slept about 6 hours per night. I intentionally

complement this with planned naps to manage sleep debt and recovery. My goal is for

WHOOP to model this recovery strategy correctly.

My Request

1. Please investigate why my naps appear as “0 seconds” in the Sleep Need and Sleep

Debt calculation.

2. Please confirm exactly how naps currently affect Sleep Need, Sleep Debt, Recovery,

and WHOOP Age / Healthspan, and whether there are any known limitations or bugs for

nighttime.
