HRV/RHR Calculation Methodology Concern

I pushed the chatbot and it admitted RHR/HRV is a snapshot, not a nightly aggregate — anyone else noticed this?

I kept pressing WHOOP’s in-app assistant on how Recovery is actually calculated, and it eventually admitted that HRV and RHR aren’t averaged across the whole night. They’re pulled from a single short “clean” window — a brief, algorithmically chosen segment of low movement and stable breathing, usually later in the night. That one snapshot becomes your “nightly HRV,” “nightly RHR,” and Recovery %.

Not disclosed anywhere in the app, onboarding, or marketing that I’ve found.

I checked this against a full month of my own data: Sleep Performance was stable (~85% avg, zero “poor” nights), but Recovery swung wildly, red to green, with no matching pattern in actual sleep quality. If sleep were the volatile input, that’d track — but it wasn’t. The volatility is coming from Recovery’s own sampling.

Anyone else run into this? Curious if WHOOP has addressed it anywhere, or if this is just how it’s always worked and nobody’s flagged it.

Whoop does say this in their own articles even if it’s not as clearly stated as you have it. But I also feel like this is a good way to measure HRV, it makes it very comparable and also as Whoop Coach stated it is often measured like this in clinical tests as well. From what I’ve heard Whoop is fairly accurate when it comes to Recovery Scoring.
In my experience I would take it more like a guideline though. A wearable will never replace your sense of your own body. Neither will Whoop. I’ve had green recoveries when I was ill and consistently perform great in yellow. I feel like the longer you spend with the Whoop data the better you learn ro interpret it for yourself.
Hope this helps!
