I want to share my recent experience because I believe other WHOOP members in the EU should be aware of this before renewing or subscribing.

I am based in Portugal, and my WHOOP subscription was presented and charged in **EUR**.

However, my bank classified the transaction as an **international transaction** and charged an additional international service fee, even though there was no currency conversion involved.

I contacted WHOOP several times to understand why this happened.

After escalating the matter, WHOOP’s final response was:

> “WHOOP is a US-based company, and members located outside of the United States may be subject to additional international transaction fees or bank fees determined by their financial institution.”

They also stated that these fees are the responsibility of the member and are not eligible for reimbursement.

So, as I understand it, the situation is:

- WHOOP subscription price shown in **EUR**
- Customer located in the **EU**
- WHOOP is a **US-based company**
- The payment can nevertheless be treated by the customer’s bank as an **international transaction**
- The customer’s bank may therefore charge an additional fee
- WHOOP considers that fee the customer’s responsibility

### Why I think EU customers should know about this

My concern isn’t that a bank is allowed or not allowed to charge a particular fee. That’s a separate question.

My concern is **transparency before purchase**.

If an EU consumer sees a subscription price in EUR, I think it’s reasonable to want to know whether the payment will be processed in a way that can result in an additional international banking charge.

I have therefore asked WHOOP where this information is disclosed to EU consumers **before they complete the purchase or renewal**.

I haven’t received an answer to that specific question.

I am now considering reporting the matter to the relevant consumer-protection authorities in the EU so that they can determine whether the information provided to EU consumers is sufficiently clear and transparent under EU consumer law.

I’m sharing this here simply so other European WHOOP members can check with their own banks **before renewing or subscribing**.

**Has anyone else in the EU experienced an additional international transaction fee when paying WHOOP in EUR?**

If so, it would be useful to know:

- which country you’re in;
- which bank/card you used;
- whether the WHOOP charge was in EUR;
- and whether your bank classified it as an international transaction.

I think it would be useful to establish whether this is an isolated case or something that may affect EU customers more generally.
